The Cake is a problem play because of its central issue involving gay marriage and religious opposition. But one of Bekah Brunstetter's two major couples involved—especially the lead-role wife and baker—is humorous enough to heighten the comic. The play's basically what used to be called a matinee comedy and what today could be considered an onstage (rather than TV) serio-comic sitcom. The titled pastry is ordered from Della, a proud baker with her own shop, by Jen, a lifelong friend and somewhat of a daughter substitute. When Jen reveals her fiance Macy is a second bride, Della acts on Biblical religious conviction, refusing the order. Although Macy considers both the Bible and sugary sweets antithetical to her own beliefs and healthful way of living, Jen is fundamentally so bothered by the situation that it affects her plans. There's a hint that Jen's unshown mother is also negatively involved. Della hopes to be winner of a TV show appearance as a great American baker. Episodes with the show's announcer—part real, mostly imagined, all nicely staged—heighten her new conflict. Problems with sexual relations in her own marriage to Tim come to the fore. Revelations for his holding back are in order. How will Della's baking aspirations, religious ideas, and relationships with Tim and Jen, and even Macy, work out? Will Jen and Macy finally be happily married, with or without cake? Cindy Gold couldn't be more involving as likable Della, always juggling the highly comic and what's serious. Beautiful Deanna Wright, being African-American, adds another dimension to intense, serious Macy. Amanda Fallon Smith's Jen's concerns have important resonance throughout. Paul Romero's Announcer's voice delivers a comic treat. As Tim, he moves assuredly from nudnick to someone who deserves understanding and love. Director Bekah Brunstetter achieves balance in her varied emphases on different aspects—especially tone--of the plot. She's chosen and motivated her cast and crew well. Special praise is due Collette Pollard's set design, using a front-of-curtain opening, then a revolving stage to show a scrumptious bakery and a bedroom that can be either couple's as needed. Costumes, lights, sound are matinee comedy perfect. The program does not specify props designer or manager, but their quality is notable.
