Review:

A star was born on the stage of the Kalita Humphreys Theater as Janelle Lutz commanded the stage for the entire production of A Very Judy Christmas. This original work by B.J. Cleveland pays homage to the 1960s TV holiday specials and is chockful of 22 feel-good Christmas and Broadway songs leading off with Judy's signature, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” followed by “Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend.” You can close your eyes for this one and imagine Carol Channing.

There's also Irving Berlin's anthem, “There's No Business Like Show Business,” and Jerry Herman's “We Need a Little Christmas” from Mame, plus the familiar Christmas songs.

The show opens on a festive set designed by Kevin Brown featuring lighted Christmas trees and wreaths both SL and SR. The entire show is set in Judy Garland's living room as she entertains numerous guests including Ethel Merman (B.J. Cleveland in drag who is a real hoot in his outrageously comic portrayal of La Merm). Dana Harper is splendid as Pearl Bailey. Ms. Harper has the mannerisms and the voice to match her portrayal of Bailey. Grace West does a sexy version of Marilyn Monroe (is there any other version?) in Monroe's signature white dress with the plunging neckline. Frank Sinatra (Jeff Wells) drops by to say hello to Judy and sing a cheerful song; daughter Liza Minnelli (Sara Elizabeth Price) pays her mama a visit, and Mel Torme (Christopher Curtis) stops by to deliver a song.

Trevor Wright is ever present as Tracy Everett. Mr. Wright shows off some delightful dance steps.
