As a sort of plot, The Swingaroos go musically around the country from the Midwest as a small combo until they become “New York City’s underground jazz band.” They seem to be condescending to perform above ground in Sarasota, where they don’t get introduced until the end of their show. That was supposed to be after 75 minutes on the evening I attended, but they started late and ended early--to the audience’s hearty approval.
An early introduction might have made a connection rather than the slightest I’ve ever noted in an FST Cabaret audience, usually warm and accepting. People came for what was advertised as 1930s to ‘40s swing or at least swinging style applied to items from the Great American Songbook along with some new compositions. What we got were a few recognizable songs embedded in a postmodern mess.
Other than the musicians wearing jackets, shirts, outdoors hats formally associated with ‘30s and ‘40s, not much seems indigenous to the period. Kimberly Hawkey is m.c., narrator, and the only vocalist, with an abrasive personality but beautiful modern gowns and heels. She plays banjo and some tiny instruments. Her best moments are slightly offstage when the show is redeemed by the males’ fine musicianship.
Co-writer Assaf Gleitzner concentrates on the piano, never looking at the audience. If he had bothered to do so when I was there, he would have seen—as I did—a predominantly glum group. They lightened up when they were able to recognize “Dream, Dream, Dream” (not usually thought of as a swing number), “I Want to be Happy” and “Crazy Rhythm.”
If the word gets out, The Swingaroos might be able to return to their beloved NYC soon. It’s interesting that ads for their FST stay do not include a closing date.
